Storm Season's Here! Are You Ready?
When disaster strikes, the Church must be prepared to minister to those inside and outside its walls. Here’s our plan.
Please Help in the Aftermath of Hurricane Delta
Of all the named storms in 2020, only one briefly touched Florida, while four have hit Louisiana. Churches must rise up to address gaps in the system. Our friends in Lake Charles specifically need our help still, so here are some updated ways to serve them.
Don't Forget Louisiana—A Hurricane Laura Update
You probably remember the time after Harvey—when the news cycle moved on, the first volunteers tired out, and so much work remained. This seclusion is even more palpable in Lake Charles, where power and water are just now being restored and the disparity between served and underserved neighborhoods is becoming clear. Let’s remind our Cajun neighbors that we’re in this together.
How to Help in the Aftermath of Hurricane Laura
Now it’s our turn to help those affected by a devastating storm and to employ what we learned from that experience. There is no infrastructure to support even high-level volunteers. The best way to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura is to give financially and connect with people who are currently on the ground.
2020 Continues: Hurricane Season
Coming as a shock to no one, 2020 is living up to forecasts for being one of the busiest storm seasons on record! Should a significant hurricane hit Houston—this year especially—there will be a palpable sense of hopelessness in the city. The Church must be prepared to minister to those inside and outside its walls.
Willing + Able: How Will Your Church Respond When Disaster Strikes?
If we know anything about disaster relief, it's that preparation for relief must take place long before a disaster strikes. That's why Houston Responds has developed The Willing & Able program to help congregations prepare for disaster and coordinate their response with other congregations in their community. Learn more about how your church can be prepared to act when disaster strikes.
St. Patrick and a Missional Mindset
As we learn about the call of Maewyn Succat—better known as St. Patrick, let’s think about our call to Houston for “such a time as this.” We pray for specific UBA initiatives, local events, and various organizations God is using to advance his gospel throughout our city, state, and world.
October Prayer Guide
Every month, we feature people, events, and ministries we want our people to pray for. So, join us as we pray to and praise God for what He's done, because we're always better together.
If you have any requests or just want to let us know you’re praying with us, feel free to tag us on Facebook or Twitter, and join the conversation. #UBAPraysTogether
How Can You Serve Those Who Serve?
When Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on our Texas coast, firefighters like me got a front-row seat to the damage and destruction 27 trillion gallons and 50 inches of rain can cause. We regularly have to deal with destruction. As Chaplain of the Houston Fire Department, I see the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual toll this work can cause. I cannot do this alone and neither can our firefighters. So, I am seeking local churches to work alongside me. Would you help?
Collaborating Through the Years
I was recently archiving some files and came across some info from 2005. That year, Hurricane Rita followed Hurricane Katrina by just a month to the day and devastated New Orleans. Many of our UBA churches—large and small—were heavily involved in helping those who had fled New Orleans. We’re deeply thankful for the action of churches when disaster strikes and proud of a legacy of innovative collaboration in our association. Join us as we reminisce and celebrate some ways we've been better together.
